Emart WowShop and Korea's Fixed-Price Store Strategy

Emart WowShop and Korea's Fixed-Price Store Strategy

Emart WowShop is a small-format store from Korea's largest hypermarket chain that sells only fixed-price items between 1,000 and 10,000 won (roughly $0.70 to $7). It is Emart's attempt to turn shrinking hypermarket visits into a cheap, fun browsing trip. The first two stores, about 330 square meters each, opened on October 22, 2026, with five planned by year end (Mobiinside, as of October 27, 2026).

Why did Emart open a fixed-price store?

Hypermarkets are losing their place in Korean shopping. According to Korea's Ministry of Trade and Industry, the hypermarket share of retail sales fell from 26.3% in 2015 to 7.9% in April 2026. Hypermarket sales dropped 11.2% year on year in July 2026, the fifth straight monthly decline, while online took 60.8% of retail sales that month.

WowShop is Emart's response. Every item falls between 1,000 and 10,000 won, and 60% of products cost 2,000 won or less. The idea is to give shoppers who no longer do a big weekly trip a reason to drop in anyway.

All three end up cheap, but each has a different engine behind it. Daiso relies on bulk buying and a short price list. Costco keeps markups far below the typical 25% to 50% retail range and earns its profit from memberships. WowShop has not yet proven which engine will carry it.

Takeaways for marketers

  1. Use fewer price points. Daiso's six prices mean shoppers never have to calculate, which makes "cheap" stick.
  2. Build low prices into the business model, not the promo calendar. Without memberships, bulk sourcing or add-on sales to cover thin margins, the low-price image ends when the sale ends.
  3. Pick one symbolic price and protect it. Costco's hot dog has done more for its price reputation than any campaign.
  4. Make stores worth visiting for discovery. With online above 60% of retail, a physical store has to be both cheap and fun to browse. Our posts on Korea's top 10 trend products of 2026 and Chocoemong receipt data show the same consumer mood.

When we shape pricing messages for retail brands in Korea, we recommend showing why prices can stay low, not just how low they are today.
